CHAPTER 8: NOVEMBER 2014

I filed for full custody. I read Dame’s text as I sat in the lobby of my mother’s rehab center with Kyree, shaking my leg, nervous about today’s counseling session.

Good, I’m glad. Porshia doesn’t deserve custody of a little girl as sweet as Samira. I responded, thinking about how close I had gotten to Dame’s daughter. During the past month that he had taken her from Porshia, I had been helping Dame take care of her, and I had fallen in love with her quicker than I had developed feelings for her daddy. Samira often confided how much she loved me, and one night while I was braiding her hair for school, she even asked if she could call me mommy. I let her down gently, instead compromising that she could call me Ky-Ky, because the last thing I wanted to do was to take the place of her mother. That night, she also asked me why her mother didn’t love her a lot. My heart broke for her, as I thought about how many nights I asked God the same thing about my own mother. I pulled her up into my lap and explained to her that her mother loved her very much but that she just didn’t know how to show it. I also let her know that no matter what, she would always have me, even if Dame and I split up, and that although she couldn’t call me mommy, I would always love her like a mother loves her daughter.

“Ladies, we are ready for you,” the therapist came out to inform us. I took a deep breath as Kyree and I walked into the room to see our mother. She had reached her 45-day mark, going beyond the 30 days that we had originally asked of her, and I was beyond proud of her. As soon as she saw our faces she started to cry as she grabbed us into her arms.

“Thank you, girls. Thank you so much,” she cried. I couldn’t believe how healthy and beautiful my mother looked. She was nothing like she had been just two months ago. Her face was full, her hair had grown, and she had even gained some weight.

As we settled down, the therapist began to explain to Kyree and me how far our mother had come, and how she had even agreed to do 90 days in the program. She then began to tell us how she had called us here, because there were a lot of underlying issues that our mother needed to work out with us. It was far safer to do it under the direction of the program where our mother had the necessary people to help her deal with her pain in a safe way. Dr. Rothenberg then had us do one on one sessions so that we could work with our issues separately. She spoke with me first as she dismissed mama and Kyree out into the lobby.

“So Kylah, your
